Central Community FFA left Indianapolis on Saturday after attending the American Degree Ceremony. We are very proud of one of our own achieving this honor in which less than 1% of all FFA members ever achieve! Dani Whittle made history for our chapter by being the first American Degree recipient since 1968 and the first female from our chapter. She is the third recipient in all of our chapter's history! Congratulations Dani! This is the greatest accomplishment of an FFA member! Your chapter is so very proud of you!

Central Community FFA's National Convention trio has come to a close. The last two days were just as busy as the first three! The members took in a lot of sessions and were able to hear the inspiring words of Temple Grandin! She's a autistic visual learner who is the mastermind behind many livestock handling systems used today! She emphasized the need for CTE and fine arts for students that have some of the same qualities of her. She reminded the members that we need people working in the trades and they are hard to come by and to consider a career in career and technical education!

We're happy to bring back Central's Biddy Basketball league again this year! Please register by Monday, October 28th. We had a great turnout last year, and are looking forward to another awesome season! This league is for boys and girls in grades K-3. It's to provide younger students with the opportunity to play basketball at a fun and competitive level in hopes to promote excitement, gain experience, boost confidence, and encourage growth within our school programs. The hour begins with a brief, 20 minute practice segment and then concludes with a 40 minute, full-court game. This event is different and separate from other girls or boys basketball camps, practices or leagues that you might have already seen posted, but is available and encouraged for all to participate. As every program grows, we learn as we go and have made a couple changes from last year. You can find all information for the league when you click on the registration link below. Sign-up here: https://tinyurl.com/3n57dm4t [Flyers were also sent home with all K-3 students.]

Day three of our National FFA Convention was just as awesome as day one and two! It was spent in the first session hearing from the keynote speaker and about the SAEs of the national proficiency winners! Then the members spent time exploring the Career Expo! We wrapped up the day by attending the rodeo! On to day four!

"For no less than four days, “school” takes place in a local park or natural spaces in the students’ community. In small groups of 8 of their peers, students explore one of four unique areas of study each day with local naturalists, conservationists, and their classroom teachers." (SOW, UI) This program, facilitated by the University of Iowa Recreational Services, became the first accredited environmental school in the state of Iowa. This outdoor classroom experience that served Central's 5th graders, is directly tied to the District’s curriculum, which allows students to explore concepts taught in a real-world setting. There are four distinct areas of study for the students across the weeklong experience: Prairies, Woodlands, Iowa/County History, Ornithology, and Archaeology. School of WIld's, along with Central's goal is to introduce students to our environment, help them develop an appreciation for nature and become better stewards of our land and water resources. School of the Wild is clearly an experience we hope to continue to provide to future 5th graders at Central. Special thanks to Motor Mill and our County Naturalists! “School of the Wild.” UI WILD - College of Education | The University of Iowa, 2024, wild.education.uiowa.edu/school-wild.

Who would have known learning is fun? Central Community FFA spent yesterday learning about the bog ecosystem of Pin Hook Bog in the Indiana Dunes National Park! They learned about the geology of the moraine and all the life that lives there including three carnivorous plants as well as how the moss that resides there was once used used to absorb as a diaper filling due to its absorbent characteristics! Then we hiked the Dune Succession Trail so they could experience Lake Michigan! We safely traveled to Indianapolis to check in at our lodging, ate some supper, and got our badges for what will be an awesome three day National FFA Convention!
